Welcome to Milton, Florida!!!Milton (formerly known as Scratch Ankle, for its propensity to grow briars, or Milltown, because Milton had the largest mill around) is a city in Santa Rosa County, Florida. The city was incorporated in 1844 and is home to Naval Air Station Whiting Field. The population was 7,045 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 8,044. It is the county seat of Santa Rosa County. It was also called "Scottman's Anchorage" for the many lumber barges that traversed the Blackwater River - thus lending the further support of the nickname "Scratch Ankle" (Scottsman's Anchorage - Scratch Ankle). It is among the oldest cities in Florida, incorporated under the Florida Territorial Acts of 1844, and is only a 30-minute drive from Pensacola. The area around Milton is known as "The Canoe Capital of Florida." It differs geographically from its coastal neighbors because of its thick cedar forests, magnolia and pine, and an abundance of freshwater creeks and rivers that thread their way through the county. The Coldwater, Sweetwater and the Blackwater Rivers provide many opportunities for recreation. The Blackwater River State Forest is the largest state forest in Florida, with more than 183,000 acres of woodlands, lakes and streams. The Blackwater River once served as the area's main transportation artery for the timber, lumber, brich, and ship-building industries. Now the river attracts over 100,000 visitors annually for all sorts of water sports.
